Highway Patrol appealing for Sunday crash witnesses

CAMPASPE Highway Patrol is appealing for witnesses following a fatal head-on collision near Leitchville on Sunday morning.

The collision, which caused one of the vehicles to overturn and its engine to catch fire, occurred on the Murray Valley Hwy about 10.45am. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

The sole occupants of each vehicle, a 75-year-old man from Birchip, who was on his way home, and a 41-year-old woman from Gunbower, died at the scene.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the driver of the white late model Jeep 4WD before the collision, either on the road or in nearby towns, and is urging them to come forward.

It’s believed the vehicle, in which the woman was driving, was in Cohuna about 10.15am before it travelled down the Murray Valley Hwy toward Gunbower.

Anyone who saw the white Jeep or anyone with dash cam footage is asked to contact Campaspe Highway Patrol on 54831533.

Police have also been told a number of motorists pulled over just after the crash and police are appealing for them to come forward.
