EXTENSIVE road works have been completed in Stanhope and Pyramid Hill.

EXTENSIVE road works have been completed in Stanhope and Pyramid Hill.

VicRoads said the substantial improvement was part of 64km of works finished before winter in northern Victoria.

The road agency’s regional director northern Brian Westley said this year’s $6 million investment for slurry sealing works was a huge increase on the previous half a million dollar annual allocation.

‘‘We’ve been able to do much more to upgrade our roads this season with this unprecedented increase in funding,’’ he said.

‘‘We know how important the roads in the northern region are to industry and locals, that’s why our crews worked hard over summer to deliver safer and more reliable journeys.’’

Mr Westley said the works fixed wear and tear on the roads.

A slurry seal is used when the existing surface is in reasonable condition but is rough to drive over or has grooves or dents in the wheel paths.

Water may pool when it rains in worn areas making it slippery and dangerous for motorists.

The sealing prepares the road surface for a new spray seal within 12 to 18 months.
