Track upgrades begin

March 02, 2018

MORE than $1 million in improvement works to be completed on the Echuca Deniliquin freight line kick off today.

Around 30 V/Line staff and contractors will upgrade tracks and bridges along the line. The works will begin this afternoon and be completed on March 11.

They will include replacing the bridge deck in Moama and maintenance work on other bridges along the line.

Crews will also add ballast and complete track welding and repairs to sections of the track.

Some freight services will not run while works are being completed, but V/Line has planned the works to minimise the disruption to freight trains and communicated with freight operators in advance to ensure they could plan ahead.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said the works were important for the ongoing upkeep of the line and to ensure the freight operators continue to have a safe, reliable pathway.

“There are three scheduled trains on this line each week, carrying rice from Deniliquin through to Melbourne, as well as other trains that carry other commodities so it’s important we maintain the line," she said.

“We know how important the freight industry is to Victoria – that’s why we’re making vital improvements to the freight network all over the state.”
